The fire in Thiseas Kambas (GRE3) eyes was burning very low this morning. He spent a restless night feeling ill. His day did not start well.
This is a very important championship for him. If he finishes in the top 8 he avoids national service in the army and gets a free place in University. Ill or not, he gritted his teeth and went out to defend his position at the top of the leaderboad.
Race 7, the first of the day, was a blast. 15 knots + and steady. Thiseas held it together and finsihed sixth. Still Number One!
Chang Hao (TPE8) took second and moved up for the first time into second place overall. Leung Ho Tsun (HKG2) was back in 10th and dropped to 5th overall. Thiseas was beginning to hope that he could do the business even if 3 degrees below par.
It was not to be. The wind dropped to 5-6 knots for Race 8. Thiseas had a disasterous 19th place finish just able to go through the motions. Unable to apply full power to his pumping. Chang who has not honed his light wind sailing technique was equally out of touch in 17th. Leung Ho Tsun struck. Took the gun and jumped back up the leaderboard to take over as No1.
The minor places were filled by Dominic Brettell (HKG 27) and Piotr Nowacki (POL722) neither of who feature in the top 10.
There are now 13 points separating the top 5. Leung is on 34. Thiseas and Liran Machlev (ISR111) are equall second on 43 and Piotr Myskowski (POL4) is 4th on 45.
Two more races tomorrow and then the medal race on Sunday. It’s going to be close run thing for everyone in the mix. Let’s all hope that Thiseas is feeling more like his normal self tomorrow and can make a real fight for the RS:X Youth World Championship Title
