Young talent – big ambitions

At just 16 years old Josh Nixon, from Takapuna Boating Club is the youngest rider in the men’s fleet at this RS:X World Championship. To prepare Nixon has given up his formal schooling choosing to complete the year by correspondence and maximising his on the water training time. Fortunately for Josh, he has the support and encouragement of his family in this decision. (more…)

Largest one design event ever held in New Zealand

Just in passing, it is worth noting that the 2008 RS:X World Championship is the largest one design sailing event ever held in New Zealand. I guess you could say that the RS:X Class is just into achieving ‘firsts’. However, we feel that these milestones are a measure of our efforts to conquer new heights and move our sport forward.

200 windsurfers from 48 countries

48 countries are represented at the event which starts on Sunday 13th January and runs through until Saturday 19th January. Despite being on the other side of the world for many competitors the 2008 RS:X World Championships at Takapuna Boating Club has attracted maximum entries including the best of the best. This is an Olympic year and consequently this World Championships is a ‘don’t miss’ regatta. (more…)

The fleet marks the passing of a legend

The whole fleet assembled for the 2008 RS:X World Championship will acknowledge the passing of a legend in the history of New Zealand and especially in achieving the summit of human endeavour by carrying black ribbons on their sails. For yesterday, Sir Edmund Hillary died. (more…)

Opening Ceremony

In an impressive and short opening ceremony attended by the Mayor of Takapuna, the 2008 RS:X World Championship opened with a traditional Maori Haka and the raising of the RS:X flag by class vice president, Piotr Hlavaty (POL). (more…)

Orb communications ‘Alert’ stakes

Out of the 200 competitors registering for the 2008 RS:X World Championship, 173 have at least one alert request registered against their name.  Gal Fridman (ISR 18) has clearly the biggest fan club as we go into the opening ceremony at 1800hrs tonight. (more…)
