“…we want to publicly acknowledge our gratitude and honour the life and accomplishments of a person who played a key role in Andalusian sailing...", Nicolas Mariño Perez, technical director of the FAV
The Andalusian Sailing Federation (FAV) has decided to dedicate one of its most important races to Kim Lythgoe, who tragically drowned in the Maldives last October. The Andalusian Federation, which was the “home” territory of the coach of Marina Alabau and Blanca Manchón, the members of the Spanish RS:X Women’s Olympic Team or the “Dream Team”, has added his name to the VI New Year's Race for RS:X (M & W), which will henceforth be known as the Kim Lythgoe Memorial Race.
Nicolas Mariño, the technical director of the Andalusian Sailing Federation, stressed, “… we want to publicly acknowledge our gratitude and honour the life and accomplishments of Kim, whose death has been a great loss for sailing and for the sport here in Andalusia in particular. Kim Lythgoe managed to bring together the two best Olympic women’s windsurfers, creating a dream team, and he knew how to overcome all the tensions between two sailors with their sights on a single target: an Olympic medal. Kim was always positive and ready to help and support the initiatives organised by the FAV: Just this year also, he represented Andalusian sailing when he presented and backed the bid to host the RS:X World Championships in Bay of Cadiz in 2012..."
The VI New Year’s Race for RS:X (M & W) – Kim Lythgoe Memorial Race will be held in the Bay of Cadiz between 28 December and 3 January. The race will be held at the same time as the European Championship for Techno 293 (Under 15 and Under 17) and the Raceboard class (Youth and Master). The race is also the opportunity for the Techno sailors to classify their country to go to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games.
Kim Yorga Lythgoe was born in Royan (France) in 1980. He was introduced to the sea at a very early age when he lived with his French father and German mother on a boat between Greece and Turkey from when he was 7 to the age of 14. That was when he learnt to windsurf. Since 2007, he was the RFEV coach for the RS.X Women’s team. As a windsurfer, he won several Spanish and French national titles. He lived in Spain for several years and it was here that his love and dedication to windsurfing meant the best results ever achieved by this class in our country.
As the coach of Marina Alabau and Blanca Manchón, the milestones of his career were Alabau becoming European and World champion this year, along with Manchón in second place on both podiums beside her team mate, without forgetting the Olympic diploma for Alabau's 4th place in the 2008 Bejing Olympics. Kim was a member of the Andalusian Sailing Federation, which he always supported wholeheartedly.
The photograph was taken during the ‘Andalucia Windsurfing World Festival-2009, held in the Bay of Cadiz last July, from the venue in the Los Toruños Metropolitan Park.
