Practical advice for your visit in Helsinki
The objective of this document is to make your life in Helsinki and Hernesaari a little bit easier, here is some practical advice.
1. Storage of road trailers
A limited amount of storage for road trailers is available at the Jouko Lindgren boatyard, behind the blue canvas halls. However, if you already have your trailer at the HSK Sail Club, we would appreciate your leaving it there for the regatta week. Contact the Race Office if you have problems. or questions.
2. Parking
Parking is allowed in many of the streets around the venue but in most places its duration is limited to 4 hrs.
In the fenced area West of the Hernesaarenranta street you can park for a fee. Note that there are two subareas: In the part closest to our venue the fee is 2€/hour, further North at the blue shipbuilding halls you can park 24 hrs for 8€. Unfortunately there are controls from time to time……………….
3. Public transport
At registration you will get a card for public transport. It is valid in all trams, buses and metro trains in central Helsinki until 10th July (included). Lauttasaari where the HSK club is located is within the area served. Bus 14 serves the Hernesaari area best. For time tables, look at hsl.fi, with English as a language alternative.
Use it like this:
Show your Travel Card to the card reader every time you board a bus. On other vehicles, you do not need to show the card to the reader as your card is programmed to be a valid season ticket.
When using your card, do not press the buttons of the card reader. Simply place your card in the reading area in the middle of the keypad. Do not remove the card from the reader until the green light appears and the reader beeps. Your travel card is valid in Helsinki. This includes Lauttasaari in the West and Vuosaari in the east. If you travel to neighbor cities Espoo, Vantaa (e.g. the Airport) or Sipoo, you need to buy a regular ticket. The last day of validity for your card is Sunday 10th July. If you use Helsinki public transport after that date, you need to buy a ticket.
4. Food
There will be a canteen at the venue serving breakfast and lunch. At the Hernesaarenranta restaurant complex there is a number of restaurants. While you can have lunch at decent prices (around 10€) at many restaurants in Helsinki, dinner prices are usually somewhat more expensive. Ethnic restaurants of which there is a lot in Helsinki often serve generous portions at reasonable prices.
5. Payments
Cards can be used almost everywhere. If you need cash the nearest ATMs are located at: Perämiehenkatu 10 and at the S-market supermarket at Hietalahdentori.
6. Rinsing your boat and sail?
The water in the Gulf of Finland is almost fresh water -very little salt. Therefore you do not need to rinse your board and sail every time you have been out sailing. Tap water for rinsing is available in the boatyard area where the shower and WC containers are.
5. Toilets, showers, sauna
– We can use the toilets at the Hernesaarenranta complex at any time when they are open.
– In the shipyard area behind the canvas hallls there is a WC container and a shower container.
– From Monday 4th un til Friday 8th we have reserved the Sauna at the Hernesaarenranta restaurant complex from 14:00 until 17:00
The Sauna and the Shower container are available as follows
